As part of an enhancement initiative to boost customer satisfaction, we were commissioned by Deutsche Bahn to reimagine the 85‑meter-long, 4‑meter-wide, poorly lit pedestrian underpass connecting the two Karlsfeld districts to the S-Bahn platform. Both inspiration and local context were provided by the Würm—a small stream flowing out of Lake Starnberg that also passes through the station in a tunnel running from west to east.
From both sides, one now enters into a fairy-tale underwater universe: aquatic creatures accompany pedestrians on the south side on a black, shiny surface rendered in a roughly pixelated style for the digital generation, while on the opposite side, with inverted colors on a matte, white background, those who appreciate encyclopedic detail are catered to—artfully heralding the wonders of nature. Two bright skylights now give the tunnel a rhythmic flow and also visually shorten its length. The access to the platform elevator has been completely rebuilt and expanded, now gleaming in its new skin of electropolished stainless steel scales, and it provides a high-quality, socially regulated waiting area until the trains arrive.
