With the construction of the Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning, the above-ground U-Bahn station, designed by Bohn Architekten in 1994, could no longer meet future traffic demands. This necessity for expansion led to the creation of an entirely new station building.
The guiding design principle was the integration of the station’s roof structure into the sensitive biotope of the Fröttmaning Heath. A gently rising earth embankment, combined with a curved roof covered with a membrane, forms an organically shaped wave that generously shelters the two new platforms.
The roof is supported by steel tree-like columns, whose branches are illuminated from below at night, creating a striking visual effect.
The reflection of light on the large white membrane surface illuminates the station hall and the 250-meter-long western wall, designed by Viennese artist Peter Kogler, which retains the earth embankment towards the station.
The southern concourse level connects to the existing pedestrian suspension bridge, which has been extended with the same profile to the P+R facility. The northern concourse serves as the main exit to the stadium, guiding visitors via a new bridge to the stadium forecourt.
