The new P+R facility was designed in collaboration with realgrün landscape architects, who, together, won first prize in a 1998 competition.
The fully barrier-free facility consists of a parking structure with 1,134 spaces, a bus stop with 15 bays, and a central service hub featuring a cafeteria and sanitary facilities.
The urban design concept is specifically tailored to its location in front of the eastern entrance of the trade fair. The sharp edge of Willy-Brandt-Allee extends in continuation of the exhibition buildings up to the corner of Alfons-Goppel-Straße and gradually slopes downward towards the fairground entrance.
From the trade fair plaza, only a large, green lawn roof is visible, rising from the square to cover the entire facility. The structure is framed along its long sides by two dark exposed concrete walls, which ascend as wedges toward the south and only become spatially significant at Willy-Brandt-Allee, where a glass facade reveals the building’s purpose.
The actual parking structure is designed as a three-aisled steel/concrete composite construction, positioned beneath the roof and between the concrete walls. Generously landscaped light courtyards provide natural lighting and ventilation.
