As part of an enhancement initiative aimed at improving customer satisfaction, we were commissioned by Deutsche Bahn to reimagine the 85-meter-long, 4-meter-wide, poorly lit pedestrian underpass that connects the two districts of Karlsfeld to the S-Bahn platform.
Both an inspiration and a local reference, the Würm—the small river flowing from Lake Starnberg, which also passes beneath the station in a tunnel from west to east—served as a guiding theme for the design.
From both entrances, one now dives into a magical underwater universe: fish-like creatures accompany pedestrians on the south side against a black, glossy background, rendered in a coarse pixelated style for the digital generation. In the opposite direction, the creatures appear in inverted colors on a matte white surface, catering to lovers of the encyclopedic, rich in detail and artistry, celebrating the wonders of nature.
Two large skylights now add rhythm to the tunnel, making it feel visually shorter. The access to the elevator leading to the platform has been completely redesigned and expanded. It now shimmers in its new scaled stainless steel façade, electropolished for a gleaming effect. Additionally, it offers a high-quality, socially visible waiting area until the trains arrive.
