A major renovation is imminent for the Sendlinger Tor U-Bahn station. The 40-year-old interchange hub will be comprehensively refurbished, modernized, and made fully accessible on all three levels. In addition, parts of the station will be rebuilt to significantly increase its capacity—plans for the platform level include, among other things, a bypass, rotated staircases, and new exits.
Alongside the complete technical overhaul of the station, there is also the opportunity for an extensive architectural upgrade, the potential of which was explored through a two-stage international competition. The first prize-winning design by the planning consortium Raupach + Bohn with Ingo Maurer, which is now being implemented, convinced the majority of the jury primarily through its “aesthetically ingenious and functionally viable concept,” according to Hannelore Deubzer. The jury chair emphasized that in the winning design, old and new are organically intertwined so that the familiar is not completely lost.
Deubzer stated, “The previously dominant blue and yellow will also determine the color scheme of the new U-Bahn station—not merely as wall or support cladding, but as a powerfully staged spatial concept. This space, defined and structured by color, is magnificent. The colors organize and shape the underground transport hub on three levels in a convincingly clear and straightforward manner.”
Project partnership with raupach architekten and Ulrike Brandi.

The complex interlinking of the individual levels is effortlessly disentangled and presented so clearly that the abundance of information—paths, directions, entrances, and exits—can be easily seen, grasped, and remembered.” In addition to these generous, scale-setting color markers, it is above all “the lighting concept developed by the lighting planners and architects that brightens this underground area. Not only does it make orientation simpler for passengers and pedestrians, it also accompanies their routes with aesthetically appealing, sophisticated methods.”
