Due to the construction of the new Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning, the above-ground U-Bahn station—designed by Bohn Architekten and in existence since 1994—could no longer meet future traffic demands. The necessary expansion resulted in an entirely new station building. The guiding concept of the design is to integrate the station canopy into the sensitive biotope of the Fröttmaninger Heide. A gently rising earthen embankment, emerging from the terrain, together with the curved roof—stretched with a membrane—forms an organically shaped wave that generously covers the two new platforms. Steel “tree supports” carry this roof, which is illuminated from below through their branches at night.

The reflection of light off the large white membrane surface illuminates the station hall and the 250-meter-long west wall—designed by the Viennese artist Peter Kogler—which screens the embankment from the station. The southern restricted-access level adjoins the existing, profile-continuous pedestrian suspension bridge to the park-and-ride facility. The northern restricted-access level serves as the main entrance to the stadium. From there, visitors can access the stadium forecourt via a new walkway.
